Weight management program
Our weight management profile is a simple test that measures a range of specific urinary metabolites that are commonly associated with fat metabolism. Simply put, this test provides us with information on your body 's ability to burn fat .
Fundamentals of Fat Metabolism
Your body's ability to utilize fat as a fuel source is often compromised by a number of dietary and lifestyle factors:
- A diet high in carbohydrates, saturated fats or calories
- Lack of excercise
- Hormonal imbalance
- Genetic influences
- Exposure to obesogens
- Nutritional deficiencies
Why use this test
There are a wide range of factors which may contribute to excessive fat storage. By identifying specific metabolite deficiencies which contribute to fat storage, we can create a specific program to help stimulate weightloss which is maintainable.
Other hormonal factors that may inhibit weightloss include; Oestrogen dominance, Thyroid imbalance, Bowel dysbiosis, Liver dysfunction, Leptin imbalance and Insulin resistance.
If indicated these hormones may be added to your urine profile.
Markers tested:
- Fatty acid metabolites
- Citric acid metabolites
Urinary Test kit $140.00
Folate testing - MTHFR $112.00
As presented on the Today Tonight show, Dr Peter Turnbridge explained his research into a genetic gene default that may contribute to weight gain. This genetic defect is now testable by Pathlab Australia as a blood test. It is not only people with this specific gene polymorphism that have trouble with the follenic pathway, factors such as heavy metal toxicity form Aluminum and Mercury as well as a high fructose intake with also block this pathway.
So how does this effect fat metabolism? According to Dr Turnbridge, a defect in folate methylation pathway leads to increased production of the oestrogen metabolite 16-a OH which encourages the body's production of free fatty acids from glucose and consequently promotes the storage of fat.
Treatment protocol - 1 capsule of follenic acid daily. BEWARE of false advertising as folic acid supplements do not rectify the defect in this pathway, only the active form of follenic acid will be effective in treatment.
Dietary & lifestyle factors:
- Avoid products containing sugar and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup)
- Avoid highly processed carbohydrates (all white flour based products)
- Only eat carbohydrates from wholegrains that contain fiber
- Ensure you eat adequate protein to maintain muscle mass
- Wait 20mins before eating seconds or dessert after a main meal to allow your gut and brain to regulate your appetite.
